| 5 Questions With Alexz Johnson
In real life Alexz Johnson is working on her own record…on TV, she’s 15-year-old Jude Harrison, the main character in CTV’s show “Instant Star”, about a musician who wins a Canadian Idol-type show.
“Songs From Instant Star”, the CD featuring Alexz’s talents, is in stores now so she agreed to answer our 5 Questions With…
Q. Why should people check out your music, what sets it apart from other material that’s out there already?
A. It’s not my music…it’s from the show…my music is actually being worked on in the States right now…I guess the answer’s going to be kind of the same anyway. I’d say listen to it because I feel that Jude has more to say than just singing about love. There’s a lot more going on in her life and each song is written from a completely different place. I think you should just listen to it because it’s good music and I think there’s no other reason than that I think a song can be about anything as long as it’s good.
And I think that the stuff I wrote for it is pretty good.
My own stuff is really different. It’s completely different than the show. It’s not going to be out for about another year or so. I’m just trying to separate the two. I’m trying to separate the kind of music that I’m going to have one day and the kind of music that Jude has.
Q. What five songs or albums would you use as a soundtrack to your life so far and why?
A. 24 Hours – Just because I think it relates to every girl who’s been stood up on a date before and is not going to put up with the guy’s crap anymore.
Let Me Fall – The lyrics are kind of to my parents, as busy as things are you just kind of start letting go, around 18 it’s kind of that age where you’re like 'oh I need some room to breathe.'
Skin – Every so often an artist finds themselves going to a really dark place when you’re writing, you don’t mean to but you do. You’re so aware of so many things when you write music. You need to pull from things that happen in your daily life so you find yourself really going deep on things and Skin is kind of a song about that for me.
Criminal – Going the wrong way down the one-way street is the lyric for that, just kind of hoping I’m making the right decisions for my career, that kind of stuff.
Time To Be Your 21 – Cause it’s just really sweet. Every girl wishes that she was a little bit older for that perfect guy.
(The songs all appear on “Songs From Instant Star”.)
Q. What’s been your most embarrassing and your most exhilarating moment in the music world so far?
A. I haven’t had an embarrassing yet. But exhilarating? Probably would have been when I just got back from L.A. and I got to sit down and chat with Rick Knowles and Rick Knowles is like a huge, huge heavy hitter producer. And…there’s so much! Opening for David Foster and probably seeing my billboard in Toronto that’s about the size of a building.
Q. Finish these two sentences:
If I wasn’t pursuing a music career right now I would probably be…
A. I don’t know what else I’d be doing!
Q. Making it in the music industry is tough, but I never gave up because…
A. I have the most amazing family. I’m one of 10 kids, and we’re all a musical family and they’re constantly behind me pushing me and getting my ass in gear whenever I fall short of something. It's pretty rad, I’ve got a pretty good team back home.
Q. Describe both yourself and your music in five words:
A. Unique, organic, beautiful, tries-to-be-funny, deep.
